Describe your company and how long you have been there?

GoDaddy is a large company with a focus on helping small business customers be successful with all online aspects of their business, from buying the perfect domain to building a functional e-commerce solution. This includes a focus to help domain investors and their small businesses through our Aftermarket department. I have been here for 11 years and have seen it grow from a start up to a public company. There have been many changes over the years, but our goal of helping customers succeed and providing an excellent customer service experience have remained steady.

What can attendees look forward to during your session?

Ideas for finding great names to build up their domain portfolio and some ways to use the tools we have to identify and possibly save money and time when buying domains.

What can attendees do in order to prepare for your session? Are there any questions or scenarios they should consider in advance?

They should look over auctions.godaddy.com, and familiarize themselves with the search features. It would also be helpful for them to download the GoDaddy Investor App from the App Store or through Google Play for Android.

What would you like attendees to learn or take away from your session?

How to find great names they can resell for a profit by using our tools to discover the right names quickly.

What are your thoughts on the new TLDs?

I think some of the new extensions are great. Personally I have some for a side business I run, such as theatretickets.nyc, .la, .vegas, .club, etc. I also have some for investments such as nevada.company (to keep in the Vegas theme), as well as some other extensions. I think it is wise to diversify.

What kinds of changes do you foresee within the industry in the next year? 5 years?

I expect to see continued global adoption and expansion of domain names which is why it is helpful to have a company to partner with who has its feet on the ground in offices worldwide, including Europe, Asia, South America and of course North America, with teams that speak the local languages to help convert domain sales for you. I also think there will be continued adoption and expansion of the new gTLDs and ccTLDs.

What are you most looking forward to at the upcoming NamesCon?

Seeing old friends and making new ones. I always look forward to seeing the exciting changes that are announced in the industry and to see what other companies are releasing, so we can all push each other to make the experience better for our customers. I am excited to have some valuable meetings as well.

What industry trends or topics do you think will be at the forefront of panel and keynote discussions this year?

International domain markets, the new TLDs and their future and impact, and the policy changes and legal issues facing everyone who is in the domain industry.

Who are you excited to hear speak at Namescon? Why?

Paul Nicks. He is my boss and friend. I have seen his role and responsibilities grow over the years and it is always exciting for me to see him have the opportunity to share what he knows with people. He has a tremendous amount of knowledge about the Aftermarket as a whole.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I was a pastor before working in the domain industry, at one point I even worked as a Chaplain for the now World Champion Chicago Cubs.

What advice can you offer those who are just getting their start in the domain industry?

Make friends and seek advice from people you can trust. Think a lot and experiment sparingly on domains until you get the hang of it in order to limit the learning curve. Also don’t be afraid to ask, most people in the industry are extremely approachable and happy to help. GoDaddy has a whole department of people who want to see you succeed as well, so do not be afraid to leverage that.

How would you describe what you do in a single sentence to a stranger?

We help people buy names as investments just as people would buy real estate. We help people buy undervalued assets and then help them sell them to someone who can use them for their business or brand.

If you had fifteen extra minutes each day, what would you do with them?

Spend them with my wife and kids.

Latest and greatest accomplishment in your career?

Speaking at NamesCon of course! I am also honoured to be included in a book that comes out in January, Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World. It is about networking and its importance in your life and career.

Where is your favourite place to escape?

Sequoia National Park. I like to go camp there. It is a place where I get no cell service and if I force myself, no WiFi, although that is getting harder and harder to escape. I can get away and spend quality time unwinding and get time to think away from the Internet, which is good from time to time.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Work hard, do good in school, learn as much as you can, and make as many friends as you can. That way you always have options and are never stuck where you are in case things change and you don’t like your work.
